According to IDC, the smartphone market has been in a tough situation for the past two years, with smartphone shipments in 2022 down 11.3% year-on-year to 1.21 billion units, and in 2023 down another 3.2% year-on-year to 1.167 billion units. However, in 2024, shipments will reach 1.24 billion units, a 6.2% increase from the previous year, marking a long-awaited recovery. From 2025 onwards, the growth rate is expected to fall to 1%, but shipments are expected to recover gradually through 2028.
Generative AI is a hot topic in the smartphone market, but Nabila Popal, senior research director at IDC, calmly analyzes that 'it has not yet had a significant impact on demand or prompted early device upgrades.'
In terms of devices using generative AI, iOS is expected to account for 58% of the market share in 2024, compared with Android's 42%, but Android is expected to push back to 55% in 2025. 'For now, devices that can use generative AI are positioned as premium flagship devices, but the price range will gradually drop, and by 2028 they will account for 70% of the entire market,' Popal said.
Anthony Scarcella, research director at Huawei, said foldable devices are gaining attention. Shipments of foldable devices are expected to grow 10.5% in 2024 and maintain double-digit growth until 2028. However, issues such as durability and the lack of suitable use cases will hinder growth.
The forecast for shipments from 2022 to 2028 is as follows:
