A method for splicing optical fibers that does not tolerate even the slightest misalignment
Since optical fiber has the characteristic that 'light reflects inside as it travels,' even the slightest misalignment is not permitted when connecting optical fibers. For this reason, a fusion splicer that uses arc discharge is used to connect optical fibers. I found a video that provides a detailed explanation of how to use a splicer, so I've put together a summary of how to use it.
The tools required for optical fiber splicing are shown below. In the center is the splicer OFS-960S , along with tools for neatly cutting optical fiber and tools for stripping the coating.
First, remove the coating from the tip of the optical fiber.
Since the cut surface needs to be clean in order to connect the optical fibers together, they are cut with a special tool.
Place the optical fiber in the splicer.
Peel off the coating on the optical fiber on the other side, cut it, and set it in the splicer.
Use the splicer to perform the joining process.
Fusion by arc discharge.
I was able to connect successfully.
Immediately after joining, the joint is not covered with a film and is in a dangerous state.
So, cover the joint with a protective cover.
Set it on the heater mounted on the splicer.
The protective cover is heated and fused.
Once the joint is protected, the optical fiber splicing process is complete.
Optical fiber splicers are available not only from specialty stores but also from online shops, and several types are sold on Amazon.co.jp for around 100,000 yen.
