Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, who is well-versed in Apple-related information, reported that Apple plans to announce a wall-mounted AI display device as a new product category in March 2025. Codenamed 'J490,' the product will function as a control center for smart homes and will utilize the new Apple Intelligence platform and Siri.

According to Garman, the J490 will have a square iPad-like appearance with a screen of about 6 inches, and will be roughly the size of two iPhones side by side. It will be available in two colors, silver and black, and will be equipped with a camera, rechargeable battery, and built-in speakers. Garman said, 'Prices are expected to be close to the competition, and the next generation model, which is more expensive, is planned to have a function that allows the screen to be moved by a robotic arm.'

The J940 is equipped with an OS codenamed 'Pebble,' and the interface is said to be a combination of watchOS and the iPhone's standby mode. The main functions include controlling home appliances with smart home functions, interacting with Siri, video calling with FaceTime, and intercom functions.

Other features include web browsing, music playback, access to memos and calendar information, and photo slideshows. However, while a mechanism for installing third-party apps from platforms like the App Store was being considered, it will not be implemented in the initial version at least.

Garman also said that a system is being developed that uses sensors to determine how close a person is and automatically adjusts functions according to the distance. For example, if the user is a few meters away, the display will show the room temperature, and when the user gets within reach, it will switch to a panel that adjusts the air conditioning in the room. Garman also learned from an anonymous source that the J940 is designed to utilize Siri and Apple Intelligence in unprecedented ways, and that it is expected that Siri, enhanced with Apple Intelligence, will be able to operate apps by voice command.

Apple has released devices with smart home hub functions such as the HomePod and HomePod mini, but this is the first time that it has a display. The J940 comes with a variety of attachments, including one that can be fixed to the wall.
