Why does searching for 'IMG_XXXX' on YouTube bring up a ton of old videos?

When you search for 'IMG_XXXX (four-digit number)' on YouTube, a large number of mysterious videos with extremely low view counts are displayed. Engineer Ben Wallace explains why such videos are displayed.

For example, the results of searching 'IMG_1111' on YouTube are shown below. Basically, a large number of videos from the 2010s with a few to several hundred views are displayed. According to Wallace, these videos were uploaded from iPhones and iPod Touches.

Between 2009 and 2012, Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch included a 'Send to YouTube' feature that allowed users to upload videos directly to YouTube from the Photos app.

Apple uses the naming convention 'IMG_XXXX' for image and video files taken on iOS devices. The first video taken on the device is 'IMG_0001', the second is 'IMG_0002', and so on. However, when such a video is uploaded to YouTube, the file name is used as the title, so a video with the title 'IMG_XXXX' is created.

According to Wallace, the collaboration between Apple and YouTube is reported to have increased the total number of video uploads by 1,700% in the first half of 2009. However, since Apple severed its ties with YouTube in 2012, videos named 'IMG_XXXX' can no longer be uploaded with just a few taps.

The video, titled 'IMG_XXXX,' has the feel of an unedited home video.

For example, searching for 'IMG_1111' turns up a video of a marching band that had been viewed 15 times at the time of writing.
