According to a report from OregonLive.com , a local media outlet in Oregon, USA, Intel has reinstated the free drink service. Intel announced the revival of the free drink service by sending a message to employees on its internal message forum 'Circuit' saying, 'While Intel still faces cost challenges, we understand that small comforts play an important role in our daily work,' and 'We understand that this is a small step, but we hope that it will be a meaningful step in supporting our workplace culture.' However, the free fruit service that was provided along with the free drink service until the summer has not been resumed.
Intel employees told OregonLive.com that morale had been significantly affected by cost-cutting measures implemented in response to the company's poor business performance. Intel plans to lay off 15,000 employees to cut costs, including 1,300 employees working in its Oregon office. In addition, Intel plans to lay off more than 1,000 employees from its offices in California, Arizona and Texas.
As part of its cost-cutting efforts, Intel also announced it would eliminate the air shuttle service that transported employees between its offices in Oregon and other western states, as well as shortening sabbatical leave periods for employees and raising eligibility requirements from four to seven years of service.
Intel also notified employees that changes would be made to its annual stock compensation plan during a company-wide meeting held in November 2024. When employees asked about the return of free drink service during the company-wide meeting, executives said, 'It won't be back anytime soon.' According to the company's Chief Human Resources Officer, Christy Pambianchi, Intel has been spending $100 million (about 15 billion yen) a year to provide free or discounted food and beverages.
