Below is a graph showing the trend in the market share of desktop x86 CPUs by Mercury Research. In the first quarter of 2024, the market share of Intel CPUs, shown in blue, has stagnated, while AMD CPUs, shown in red, have grown steadily, reaching a market share of 28.7%, up 9.6% year-on-year, in the third quarter of 2024. According to overseas media Tom's Hardware, AMD's share of the desktop CPU market is the highest it has been in the past 15 years.

Almost all known retailers have run out of stock, and in most cases it's no longer possible to pre-order. The next shipment is expected to arrive on Nov 12, for which Galaxus (529€) and Hardwarecamp24 (549€) are still accepting orders.
'Intel's decline in desktop CPU market share is due in part to the negative press it received following the crashes of its 13th and 14th generation Core processors,' said Dean McCarron of Mercury Research.
In fact, in November 2024, Intel was hit with a class action lawsuit from users over crash issues with its 13th and 14th generation Core processors.

Similarly, AMD is expanding its share in the notebook PC CPU market, with a 22.3% share in the third quarter of 2024, up 2.8% year-on-year. Tom's Hardware speculated that 'this result is probably due to AMD launching its Ryzen AI 300 series products slightly earlier than Intel's Lunar Lake , allowing it to be installed in more x86-based Copilot+ PCs.'
AMD is also experiencing moderate growth in server CPUs. In the third quarter of 2024, AMD's EPYC CPU share in the server market increased 0.1% from the second quarter of 2024 and 0.9% year-on-year to 24.2%. Tom's Hardware said, 'This is a fairly modest increase, but it shows that AMD's market share is gradually increasing. Over the next few quarters, AMD's market share will continue to increase.'
It has also been reported that AMD will surpass Intel in data center revenue in the third quarter of 2024.
