It turns out that the average CPU benchmark score fell below the previous year for the first time in the past 20 years

PassMark updates the average benchmark score for Windows PCs around the world every two weeks, and the new average score for 2025 has revealed some unique features for the year.
CPU benchmark scores have consistently improved year-on-year since measurements began in 2004. However, in 2025, the scores are expected to fall below the previous year, with desktop CPUs down 0.5% and laptop CPUs down 3.4%.

PassMark pointed out, 'That's unexpected. I don't know why, but maybe people are buying cheaper hardware or lower power models?'
So this is unexpected.

Average CPU performance in 2025 is going down.
Maybe the first time in history?
Why, we don't know....
Maybe people buying cheaper hardware or low (electrical) power machines?
Maybe crap bloatware? Maybe Win11 vs Win10?
This average value was updated on February 10, 2025, and the number of samples is still not large compared to previous years.
For example, for desktop CPUs, the number of samples in 2024 is 186,053 with an average score of 26,436, and for 2025, the number of samples is 47,810 with an average score of 26,311. For laptop CPUs, the number of samples in 2024 is 101,316 with an average score of 14,632, and for 2025, the number of samples is 25,541 with an average score of 14,130.
The ranking by CPU model is as follows, and it appears that for desktop CPUs, the scores have plateaued for three consecutive years since 2023.

For laptop CPUs, AMD's Ryzen 9 7945HX3D took the top spot from 2023 to 2024, but in 2025, Intel's

'What's really puzzling is that AMD, Intel, and even Qualcomm have just released desktop and laptop CPUs that are supposed to perform better than ever before. It's true that the AMD Ryzen 9000 series and Intel Arrow Lake Core Ultra 200S processors, excluding the X3D chips, were disappointing to many enthusiasts, but they were at least supposed to provide a modest performance boost, especially in productivity applications,' wrote Tom's Hardware.
