Ai-Da is a 'humanoid robot equipped with AI that paints pictures' developed by gallery director Aidan Mellor and others. The algorithm part was designed by the University of Oxford, and the body including the robotic arm was designed by the University of Leeds and the robotics company EngineeredArts.

Ai-Da exhibited a set of five paintings, including a portrait of Ai-Da himself and a portrait of Ada Lovelace, the 19th century computer scientist from whom Ai-Da is named, at the AI for Good Global Summit, an international summit on AI held in Geneva, Switzerland in early 2024. One of the paintings was of Alan Turing, a British mathematician known as the 'father of computer science' and the 'father of artificial intelligence.'

The painting, titled 'AI God. Portrait of Alan Turing,' is quite large, measuring 188cm wide and 253cm tall.

Equipped with AI, Ai-Da has a voice conversation function, so he spoke directly with the studio members to generate ideas for the painting. After being asked about the style of the painting, the colors to be used, the content, tones, textures, etc., Ai-Da looked at Turing's photo with a camera mounted on his eyeball and created the painting. In addition to using a 3D texture printer to complete the painting on canvas, he also had the assistance of a studio assistant.

'AI God. Portrait of Alan Turing' was auctioned by Sotheby's , the world's oldest international auction house, on November 8, 2024, and received more than 27 bids from around the world. Initially, the winning bid for 'AI God. Portrait of Alan Turing' was estimated to be between $120,000 and $180,000 (approximately 18.4 million to 27.5 million yen), but an anonymous American person ultimately won it for $1,084,800.

'Today's record-breaking price for the first work by a humanoid robot artist offered at auction marks a historic moment in modern and contemporary art and reflects the growing intersection of AI technologies with the global art market,' Sotheby's said in a statement.

Ai-Da himself commented, 'A key value of my work is that it acts as a catalyst for dialogue around emerging technologies. My portrait of AI pioneer Alan Turing invites viewers to reflect on the godlike nature of AI and computing, while considering the ethical and societal implications of these advancements.'

The proceeds from this auction will be used to improve Ai-Da's new design.
