On November 6, 2024, CEO Altman posted a post on X (formerly Twitter) that said 'chat.com.' Clicking on this link will redirect you to ChatGPT .

Until now, the chat.com domain was owned by HubSpot founder and CTO Dharmesh Shah. Shah, who acquired the chat.com domain name in early 2023 for approximately $15.5 million (approximately 2.4 billion yen), announced in March 2024 that he had sold the chat.com domain name to an undisclosed buyer. At the time of the sale, Shah stated that he 'sold the domain for a higher amount than it cost to acquire it,' and it has become clear that this buyer purchased the chat.com domain for more than $15.5 million.

'The reason I bought chat.com is simple - I believe chat-based UX will be the next big thing in software. Communicating with computers and software through a natural language interface is incredibly intuitive, and this is made possible by generative AI,' said Shah.

Shah later revealed that the undisclosed buyer was OpenAI, and that the deal was reportedly made in OpenAI stock rather than cash.

Although OpenAI acknowledged that it had acquired the chat.com domain name, it did not disclose the amount spent on the acquisition.
