The job cuts were announced in an email to all employees on October 30, 2024, by Executive Director Nabiha Saeed.
According to the news site TechCrunch, the Mozilla Foundation had about 120 employees just before the layoffs. The Mozilla Foundation is largely divided into Mozilla Corporation, a subsidiary that develops the Firefox web browser, and the non-profit Mozilla Foundation, which governs the Mozilla Corporation. The layoffs are not expected to affect Mozilla Corporation.

Syed explained the cuts were made to create a 'unified and powerful narrative from the foundation,' including a revamp of strategic communications.
'The Mozilla Foundation's reorganization will enable us to be more agile and impactful, and accelerate our work to create an open and equitable technological future for all of us,' said Brandon Bolman, vice president of communications for the Foundation.
Although the advocacy division will no longer exist as an independent department, advocacy will remain a central tenet of the Mozilla Foundation's activities, and Bormann explained that they are 'rethinking their approach.'
