According to technology media GeekWire, AWS executives announced the employee reductions in an internal email on the morning of April 3, 2024. Hundreds of employees will be laid off in the sales, marketing and global services departments, as well as hundreds more in the brick-and-mortar technology department.

'We take these decisions seriously and know change is difficult. The industry we operate in moves quickly and requires us to remain agile as an organization,' Matt Gurman, AWS senior vice president of sales, marketing and global services, said in an email. 'The changes we are making will prepare the organization for the future, align with our strategy and priorities, and reduce duplication and inefficiencies. I recognize the impact this will have on each individual.'

The job cuts follow Amazon's announcement that its cashierless checkout technology, Just Walk Out , will be phased out from its Amazon Fresh supermarkets.

'We have identified several areas of our organization where we need to streamline so we can continue to focus on key strategic areas where we will have the greatest impact. We did not make this decision lightly, and we are committed to supporting employees as they transition into their new roles, both inside and outside Amazon,' an Amazon spokesperson said in a statement.

U.S. employees who are being laid off will continue to receive pay and benefits for at least 60 days, will have access to outplacement assistance and health care benefits, and may be eligible for severance packages.

Amazon has laid off more than 27,000 employees between 2022 and 2023, and has continued to lay off employees at its streaming service Prime Video, film studios , and healthcare divisions since 2024.
