'Yubi Dice' allows two or more people to create fictitious dice and generate random numbers

On October 28th, board game developer

mor! released the specifications for ' Yubi Dice ,' a game that allows two or more people to generate random numbers equivalent to those of a six-sided die simply by sticking out a finger.

'Yubi Dice' is a randomizer developed by mor!'s gaming circle ' Yotosei ', for use in the 'Coaster Printing Game Series', a game that can be played with just a coaster and a pencil.

When a regular six-sided die is rolled, the six possible numbers are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, and the probability of each number appearing is theoretically 1 in 6. However, under the constraint of 'only one coaster and a pencil,' it is not assumed that a six-sided die is in hand. Therefore, a device that can randomly output numbers up to 6 is required even without a die.

Humans have five fingers on their hands, and six different hand patterns can be made by the number of fingers held up, as shown in the image below. However, since humans decide the number of fingers based on their own will, the outcome cannot be determined by that alone.

Therefore, in 'Finger Dice,' everyone puts up 0 to 5 fingers, and the result is determined by the total number of fingers put up by you and the person next to you.

Below is a list of the results determined by the total number of pieces. To summarize, the total number is divided by 6 and the remainder is treated as the result.

For example, if the person on the right holds up one finger and the person on the left holds up two fingers, the total number of fingers is three, and the person on the right rolls a '3.'

If the person on the right holds up five fingers and the person on the left holds up one finger, the total number of fingers is 5 + 1 = 6. In other words, the person on the right rolls a '6.'

If the person on the right puts up five fingers and the person on the left puts up four, the total number of fingers is nine. The person on the right rolls a '3.'

However, since the system determines the number of fingers on the dice, if two players collude, they can get the number they want. For this reason, mor! says that finger dice are a little more vulnerable to malicious intent than real dice, and are not suitable for gambling or cooperative games.

Benign Tumor has examined the random number generation of Finger Dice on his blog, arguing that 'The random numbers generated by Finger Dice are by no means uniform, but it can be said that it is possible to generate random numbers that are closer to uniform than if you simply hold out your fingers.'
