It is expected that many tourists, both domestic and international, will visit the Kansai region for the Osaka Expo in 2025. In order to make travelling more comfortable, four private railway companies in the Kansai area have introduced a new payment method called touch payment.
Touch payment can be used with cards bearing the 'Ripple mark (wave mark)' in the red box on the left side of the image below, including 'VISA,' 'JCB,' 'American Express,' 'Diners Club,' 'Discover,' and 'UnionPay' brands. In addition to credit cards, it can also be used with debit cards and prepaid cards. Mastercard support is planned for a later date.
When boarding or alighting, you can simply touch the applicable card to the dedicated reader installed at the ticket gate. Hanshin Railway plans to not install automated ticket gates until spring 2025, so at stations that do not support this, you can simply tell the attendant that you would like to use touch payment.
In addition, all companies will apply the standard adult fare for touch payment, and children's fares and discount services will not be available.
