Panasonic has announced that it will end production of fluorescent lamps by the end of September 2027. Panasonic has been selling fluorescent lamps since 1951, and at its peak produced over 100 million lamps per year. However, in recent years, the company has been shifting its business to energy-efficient LED lighting, and at the end of March 2019, it stopped producing lighting fixtures compatible with fluorescent lamps. The reason for this decision is that at the Fifth Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury in November 2023, the manufacture and import/export of all fluorescent lamps for general lighting was banned at the end of 2027. Looking ahead, Panasonic has announced that it will be remodeling its integrated LED base light ' iD series ' in order to rapidly popularize more environmentally friendly LED lighting.
