YouTube introduces 'filmed on camera' label to ensure 'unedited video and audio' using C2PA standard

YouTube has introduced a new 'filmed on camera' label to certify that video and audio have not been altered, which could make it easier to distinguish between video created by generative AI or CG and real-life footage.

Why labeling authentic media matters

When creators shoot footage with a camera that complies with the ' C2PA ' standard, which guarantees the origin of content, and upload it to YouTube, YouTube detects the metadata based on C2PA and adds the label 'Shot on camera' to the video's description. Viewers can check the 'Shot on camera' label in the description, so they can immediately verify that the video has not been altered.

C2PA is an organization jointly operated by multiple technology companies, including Microsoft, Adobe, and OpenAI, and is formulating standards such as ' Content Credentials ,' which provide AI usage history and creator information to content, and promoting their introduction to technology devices. A camera called the Leica M11-P has already been released that uses content credentials, and photos taken with this camera are given metadata based on the content credentials.

According to YouTube, to be labeled as 'filmed on camera,' a video must have been shot using a tool that supports C2PA (version 2.1 or higher), such as a specialized camera, software, or mobile app.

In addition, editing footage in a way that makes it impossible to trace its origin, for example by shooting C2PA-compliant footage with a non-C2PA-compliant camera, may result in the label being withheld.

The 'Shot on Camera' label was implemented with the help of Truepic , one of the founding members of C2PA. Truepic has released the first video with the 'Shot on Camera' label below. This footage was shot in the same location as the world's first video posted on YouTube, ' Me at the zoo .'

In addition, YouTube added that 'The camera label will only appear if the creator used C2PA technology to shoot the video, and the absence of the label does not mean that the audio or video has been edited.' In addition, it was pointed out that it is necessary to be aware of the risk that edited video may be shot with a C2PA-enabled camera and labeled as 'camera.'
