According to a report from the People's Daily, Apple began operating an applied research facility in the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Zone in Shenzhen, China on Thursday, October 10, 2024 (local time). According to the report, the research facility will be responsible for testing and research of key products such as the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro, as well as strengthening cooperation with Chinese suppliers. The facility will initially cover an area of 20,000 square meters and will eventually employ more than 1,000 people from both within and outside of China.

Apple has announced that it will build a new research facility in Shenzhen in March 2024, which will be the 'largest research facility' outside the United States, according to the People's Daily. Isabelle Ge Mahe, Apple's managing director for mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, told state media China Daily in March 2024, 'We have already invested 1 billion yuan (about 21 billion yen) in our applied research lab in China, and this investment plan will continue to expand.' Apple's investment in research and development in China has doubled in the past five years.

Hong Kong daily South China Morning Post has reached out to Apple for comment on the new applied research facility, but has not received a response at time of writing.

The South China Morning Post reported that Apple is looking to increase its research investment in China, despite the fact that the company has been diversifying its supply chain to reduce risk by moving production to

India and Vietnam .

According to research firm CINNO, Huawei's smartphone sales in mainland China surpassed Apple's for the first time in about four years in August 2024. This is consistent with the results of a survey by the government think tank China Academy of Information and Communications Technology. According to the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, shipments of smartphones made outside of China, including iPhones, fell 12.7% year-on-year in August 2024.

According to another research firm, IDC, Apple has fallen out of the top five smartphone sellers in China in the second quarter of 2024, with its market share in China shrinking to less than 14%.

Apple's combined sales in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan fell 6.5% year-on-year to $14.76 billion in the second quarter of 2024.
