Of the smartphone shipments in China in April 2022, approximately 1.4 million were iPhones. This is significantly lower than the average number of overseas shipments for the same month in the past, which was 3.1 million units. In addition, in a normal year, the number of units shipped in April would increase by about 1% compared to the previous month, but the number of units shipped in April 2022 decreased by 26% compared to the previous month.
In April 2022, Apple announced that in response to the spread of the new coronavirus in China, ``Sales for the second quarter of 2022 (April to June) were lower than expected by $8 billion (approx. trillion yen) may be even lower. '
'Some companies, such as Xiaomi, Oppo and vivo, will suffer the most,' said Ming-Chi Kuo, a supply chain analyst at Hong Kong-based TF International Securities. In particular, sales of the inexpensive iPhone SE may be hurt.'
In addition, Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi announced that smartphone sales from January to March 2022 decreased by 11% compared to the same period last year. The reasons for this are ``logistics difficulties, parts shortages, and store closures due to the Chinese government's strict measures against the new coronavirus.''
Mr. Kuo estimates that shipments of major Chinese smartphone manufacturers such as Xiaomi and Oppo in 2022 will be reduced by about 270 million units from industry forecasts.
