A camera app developer talks about the iPhone 16 Pro's camera performance, with the resolution of the ultra-wide angle and macro cameras increasing but the main camera remaining unchanged

The iPhone

16 Pro , which was released on Friday, September 20, 2024, is equipped with a camera control button and a 48MP ultra-wide-angle camera. Sebastian de With, developer of the camera app Halide , has summarized the camera performance of the iPhone 16 Pro.

◆iPhone 16 Pro camera
The iPhone 16 Pro is equipped with a 48MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 48MP Fusion camera (main camera), and a 12MP 5x telephoto camera. In the iPhone 15 series, the 5x telephoto camera was only installed on the top-of-the-line iPhone 15 Pro Max, but in the iPhone 16 series, the iPhone 16 Pro is also equipped with a 5x telephoto camera.

◆48MP ultra-wide-angle camera
Previous iPhone series have been equipped with 12MP ultra-wide-angle cameras, but the number of pixels in the ultra-wide-angle camera on the iPhone 16 Pro has been increased by four times. This improves the resolution of photos taken with the ultra-wide-angle camera.

In bright places, it is possible to take high-resolution photos that are comparable to those taken with the main camera, but in dark places, the resolution will be reduced due to noise reduction processing.

The increased pixel count of the ultra-wide-angle camera has also improved macro photography. Macro photography on the iPhone involves 'cropping the center of an image taken with the ultra-wide-angle camera,' but on previous iPhones, the number of pixels was reduced by further cropping photos taken with the 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera. With the iPhone 16 Pro, you can take relatively high-resolution macro photos with 12MP resolution.

◆48MP main camera
The image quality of the iPhone 16 Pro's main camera is said to be almost the same as that of the iPhone 15 Pro.

◆12MP 5x telephoto camera
Mr. Wiss praised the 5x telephoto camera, saying, 'The 5x telephoto camera is like a pair of binoculars, and is perfect for wildlife, landscapes, and distant objects.' However, he also pointed out some problems, such as 'unlike a wide-angle camera, you can't crop it later, so it's difficult to use,' and 'it's difficult to take pictures at night because it can't capture much light.'

◆Dark place photography
The iPhone 16 Pro's display can be lowered to 1 nit, which makes it easier to shoot in dark places. On the other hand, the problem with night mode is that 'you can shoot brightly without thinking about it, but it's difficult to get the results you want because you can't make fine adjustments.'

◆Camera Control
The iPhone 16 series has a new button called 'Camera Control,' which can be used as a shutter button or to change exposure settings by swiping the camera control. With praised the camera control for being able to launch the camera just by pressing the button and for being able to adjust settings without looking at the screen because the camera vibrates when swiping the camera control. On the other hand, he also said that he felt that the camera control was unrefined because there were too many settings that could be set.
