Even before it was acquired by Elon Musk and renamed to X , Twitter released an annual transparency report that included information about how many tweets it had deleted at the request of government agencies .

However, since Twitter changed to X, the frequency of transparency reports has decreased, and the information revealed in the reports has also decreased. Meanwhile, on September 25, 2024 local time, X released its first transparency report in over a year. Technology media Engadget predicts that the reason X released the transparency report is 'to prevent advertisers who are concerned about the toxicity of the platform from leaving X. '

According to X's newly released transparency report, the company suspended just under 5.3 million accounts for violating its terms of service in the first half of 2024. A similar report published by X in the first half of 2022 found that the number of suspended accounts was 1.6 million, which represents a roughly three-fold increase in the number of account suspensions.

Below is a breakdown of the policy violations reported by users. The total number of content violations reported by users was 224,129,805, with the most reported violations being posts related to abuse and harassment (36.47%).

X reported that it had 'removed or labeled' 10,675,980 total posts reported by users for violating its platform rules, with the majority of posts removed for violating X's hateful conduct policy (4,950,321), followed by abusive and harassing posts (2,648,475), and violent content (2,235,891).

Since Musk bought Twitter, many advertisers and civil rights groups have expressed concerns that the platform is not properly censoring content. X has refuted this, arguing in a transparency report that less than 1% of posts violate its rules.

However, a transparency report released before Musk bought Twitter said it had suspended 1.3 million accounts for violating its terms of service and removed or labeled 4.3 million posts.

X had published a simplified transparency report in April 2023, which shared figures on content removal but gave little information on other details, such as the number of removal requests from government agencies, though the latest transparency report does reveal those figures.

According to X, the company received 18,737 requests for information from government agencies in the first half of 2024, the majority of which were from within the EU. The breakdown of countries and regions from which information was requested is as follows, with an information disclosure rate of 53%.

X also revealed that it received 72,703 content removal requests from government agencies in the first half of 2024, of which 70% were complied with. The most requests for removal were from Japan, with 46,648 requests. The next most were from Turkey, with 9,364 requests. The rest of the breakdown is as follows:

The table below summarizes the total number of copyright and trademark takedown notices and the removal rate. The total number of posts notified of copyright infringement was 188,661, of which 112,897, or 59.84%, were removed. There were 70,980 notices of trademark infringement, of which 6,296 were removed.

X has committed to publishing a transparency report every two years.
