The Falcon 9 passengers on board include Jared Isaacman, founder of electronic payments company Shift4 , former Air Force pilot Kidd Poteet, and SpaceX engineers Anna Menon and Sara Gillis.

The Falcon 9 carrying Isaacman and others was launched from the Kennedy Space Center at 5:23 a.m. local time on September 10, 2024.

The Dragon spacecraft then separated from the Falcon 9 and reached its target altitude of 1,400 km. According to SpaceX, Dragon and its crew reached the highest altitude since the Apollo program conducted from 1961 to 1972.

The crew will carry out the five-day 'Polaris Dawn' mission. The main objective of the mission is to conduct the first-ever extravehicular activity (EVA) by private astronauts wearing spacesuits developed by SpaceX. In addition, 36 research and experiments by multiple partner institutions aimed at improving human health on Earth and during long-term spaceflight will be conducted, as well as a Starlink laser communication test in space.

According to the plan, Isaacman's extravehicular activity will take place for about 20 minutes from 16:23 on September 12, 2024, Japan time, and together with Gillis, Isaacman will be the first private citizen to perform a spacewalk.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said, 'This mission will be the furthest humans have traveled from Earth since the Apollo program and therefore involves more risks than usual. The safety of the crew must be our absolute top priority.'
