Kaspersky is a security company founded in 1997 by Russian computer virus researcher Eugene Kaspersky, and is known as a major antivirus and Internet security software company. On the other hand, there are concerns about Kaspersky's ties to the Russian government, and in 2017 the Department of Homeland Security issued an order banning the use of Kaspersky products and services by government agencies.

In addition, during Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Kaspersky maintained a neutral stance , but concerns about its ties with the Russian government remained, and in March 2022, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) added Kaspersky to its 'List of telecommunications equipment and services deemed to pose an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States (Security Risk List).'

On June 20, 2024, the US Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) announced a final decision to prohibit Kaspersky Lab, Inc., a US subsidiary of a Russia-based security company, from selling or providing products or services to citizens in the US, announcing a nearly complete ban on Kaspersky products in the US. As a result, Kaspersky will not be able to enter into new contracts with US businesses from July 20, 2024, and will not be able to distribute updates or operate security services for domestic users from September 29, 2024.

Additionally, the FCC has announced that effective September 6, 2024, it will ban the use of equipment that contains Kaspersky cybersecurity or antivirus software. Devices that contain Kaspersky software will not be able to obtain a license from the FCC for use in the equipment, and will therefore need to remove the software from their networks and replace it with a product from another security supplier.

Following these decisions, Kaspersky said that 'opportunities to do business in the United States are no longer viable' and is winding down its operations after July 20, 2024. Kaspersky said it plans to eventually close its U.S. offices and lay off employees.

Even after these measures, there are still about 1 million Kaspersky users in the United States. To help these users, Pango Group and Kaspersky have agreed to migrate these customers to Pango Group's antivirus software ' Ultra AV '. Users have been informed that they can now use Ultra AV with their existing paid subscriptions, and that they can use the VPN and password manager.

'The good news is that customers don't need to take any action to migrate, and we have an expanded customer support team ready to help Kaspersky users,' said Neil Feathers, president and COO of Pango Group.

Feather did not disclose the specific terms of the user subscription, and Kaspersky declined to comment.
