Kaspersky is a security company founded in 1997 by Eugene Kaspersky, a Russian who has been researching computer viruses since 1989, and is known as a major developer of antivirus and Internet security software.

Concerns about Kaspersky's ties to the Russian government have been raised for some time, and in 2017 the Department of Homeland Security issued an order banning the use of Kaspersky products and services by government agencies .

Later, when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Kaspersky made clear its neutral stance , but concerns about its ties to Russia remained, and in March 2022 , the Federal Communications Commission added Kaspersky to its 'security risk' list . In June 2024, it was decided to ban the sale of Kaspersky products in the country .

As a result, Kaspersky will be banned from signing new contracts with U.S. operators from July 20, 30 days after the announcement, and will be prohibited from distributing updates or operating security services from September 29, 100 days after the announcement.

Kaspersky's withdrawal from the US is the result of these various measures, and in an interview with the news site BleepingComputer, Kaspersky commented, 'We are very disappointed to have to make this decision, as the opportunity to do business in the US is no longer viable.'

Commerce Secretary Gina Lemond said Kaspersky users would not be penalized for continuing to use the products, but added, 'I strongly encourage everyone to stop using Kaspersky products immediately and switch to alternative solutions to protect yourself and your family's data.'

Kaspersky celebrated its 27th anniversary on July 12, 2024, and reported that 3,300 participants attended the commemorative event despite bad weather.
