Japan-based AI company 'Sakana AI' receives over 14 billion yen in investment from NVIDIA and others

Tokyo-based AI company Sakana AI has announced that it has raised over $100 million in funding. NVIDIA also invested in Sakana AI, and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang commented:

Sakana AI is an AI company founded in 2023 by David Ha and Lion Jones, both former Google employees. Sakana AI is based in Tokyo and has announced numerous achievements to date, including Evo-Ukiyoe , an AI that can generate ukiyo-e art, and AI Scientist, an AI that can perform everything from experiments to writing papers. Jones is also known as one of the developers of Transformer , the underlying technology for generative AI.

Sakana AI has announced that it has raised over $100 million in funding from multiple sources, including New Enterprise Associates , Khosla Ventures , and Lux Capital , with NVIDIA also among the investors.

Sakana AI also announced a collaboration with NVIDIA. Through collaboration with NVIDIA, Sakana AI will be able to 'access NVIDIA's GPU technology to push the boundaries of AI research,' 'gain early access to NVIDIA's data centers in Japan, giving Japan a competitive advantage in AI development using NVIDIA's latest technology,' and 'cultivate the AI community by hosting events in Japan and increasing outreach to educational institutions.'

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang commented, 'Sakana AI is developing cutting-edge foundational models that use NVIDIA's high-speed computing platform to automate and accelerate scientific discovery, promoting the democratization of AI in Japan.' Sakana AI CEO Ha also said, 'We have raised $100 million to develop Sakana AI in Japan into a world-class AI research institute. We will continue to push the boundaries of AI. Sakana AI operates much faster than most world-class cutting-edge AI research institutes.'
