According to information obtained by TechCrunch, the 27 people who were fired by Brave were employees from various departments of the company. Brave confirmed the firings but declined to disclose the number of employees who were fired or the reasons for the firings.

Market research firm PitchBook estimates Brave has about 191 employees, meaning the layoffs represent a reduction of about 14% of its workforce.

Brave also announced in October 2023 that it had laid off 9% of its employees, at the time explaining that the layoffs were due to 'cost management in a tough economic environment.'

On the other hand, it has also been reported that the number of installations increased sharply in March 2024.

Brave is known for its privacy features, including an ad blocker as standard, and is also committed to blockchain, such as by introducing a program that allows users to earn the virtual currency Basic Attention Token (BAT) as a reward for viewing opt-in ads.

At the time of writing, the price of BAT has fallen by nearly 90% from its peak in November 2021.

In addition, the company has been rolling out its AI assistant 'LEO' since August 2023, and in June 2024, it will integrate its proprietary search engine 'Brave Search' into the AI, allowing users to ask LEO questions while browsing the Internet to obtain additional information.

Brave has not disclosed the costs of developing these AI projects, and TechCrunch noted that 'it is unclear whether these costs are related to the recent layoffs.'
