Strawberry is optimized for more difficult math problems and programming tasks, and its enhanced logic allows it to effectively solve language-related tasks given enough time. In an internal demonstration of an AI system based on Strawberry, it was reported to have successfully solved the New York Times word puzzle 'Connections.'
Reuters reported that an AI model in OpenAI's internal AI tests scored over 90% on the MATH benchmark, which measures mathematical ability, and The Information speculates that this model is Strawberry. It was also reported that the model was demonstrated to the National Security Agency (NSA).
According to an internal document from OpenAI, the Strawberry model is planned to be used to conduct 'autonomous internet searches' in which the AI plans to plan ahead and conduct detailed research. According to information from two people involved in the Strawberry project, OpenAI may release a chatbot version of Strawberry as part of ChatGPT as early as fall 2024.
Strawberry was formerly known as Q* (Qstar) and was an AI model developed by Ilya Satskivá, former chief scientist at OpenAI, and continued to be developed by Jakub Paczocki and Shimon Sidor after Satskivá left the company.
OpenAI is also using Strawberry to train an AI model called Orion, which it hopes will outperform GPT-4.
