On October 25, 2024, technology media The Verge reported that 'OpenAI plans to release its next-generation model, Orion, by December.' The name Orion itself had been revealed before, but this was the first time that a specific release date had been reported.

Reports have said that Orion could be up to 100 times more powerful than GPT-4, that unlike the releases of GPT-4o and o1, it will not be released widely through ChatGPT initially, but will instead be available to companies that work closely with the company, and that preparations are underway for Microsoft engineers to be able to host Orion on Azure as early as November. There have also been speculations that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's sudden post, 'The night sky is so beautiful. I'm looking forward to the winter constellations rising soon,' is a reference to Orion.




However, Altman himself denied the report, calling it 'fake news that got out of control.'




According to multiple media outlets, including The Verge and TechCrunch, an OpenAI spokesperson said, 'We do not have plans to release the AI model codenamed Orion in 2024. We have many other great technologies that we plan to release.'

Regarding the above comment, TechCrunch reported that 'there is still room for speculation, and it is possible that the next major model will not be Orion, or that a new model other than Orion will be released. In addition, Orion may not be released in 2024, but may be released in 2025.
