Bloomberg reported that Apple is planning to release a Mac equipped with an AI-specialized chip, and that it plans to redesign the Mac mini as part of that. According to testimony from a source that Gurman obtained from his own source, Apple plans to release a Mac mini equipped with the M4 in the second half of 2024, which will be the first major design change since the 'Mac mini redesign' under Steve Jobs in 2010.

In addition, the Mac mini with M4 will be smaller than the previous model, and will be the size of an Apple TV, according to a source. The Mac mini with M4 is one of the new Macs that Apple plans to announce in the coming months, and Apple is also planning to release the iMac and MacBook Pro with the M4 series as early as this year. In addition to this, a new MacBook Air is also in the works for spring 2025, and a new Mac Pro and Mac Studio for mid-2025.

The M4-equipped Mac mini will be compact overall, but it may be taller than the current model. The current Mac mini is about 1.4 inches (3.6 cm) tall. The Apple TV will be about 3.7 inches (9.4 cm) wide, which is less than half the width of the current Mac mini. In addition, the new Mac mini will continue to use aluminum for the case, and will have at least three USB-C ports, a power port, and an HDMI port on the back.

The new Mac mini is being developed in two versions, one based on the same M4 chip as the iPad Pro, and the other is a higher-end model that uses the unannounced M4 Pro. The higher-end model will include a larger memory capacity (RAM) and a more powerful GPU for graphics performance. A developer involved in the development of the new Mac mini described the device as 'essentially an iPad Pro in a small box.'

The new Mac mini may be cheaper to manufacture, but it's unclear whether these cost savings will be reflected in the retail price.
