The main features added to NVMe 2.1 are as follows:
- Enables live migration between PCIe NVMe controllers and NVM subsystems
New host-oriented data placement for SSDs that simplifies ecosystem integration and is backwards compatible with previous NVMe specifications
Support for offloading some host processing to NVMe storage devices
- Network boot mechanism for NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF)
Support for NVMe over Fabrics zoning
Host management of encryption keys and encryption with Key Per I/O
- TLS 1.3 support plus security enhancements such as centralized authentication verification entity for DH-HMAC-CHAP and post- sanitization media validation
Enhanced management including support for high availability out-of-band management, management over I3C , out-of-band management asynchronous events, and dynamic creation of NVM subsystems

The NVMe standardization organization said, 'The new and updated specifications are intended to better integrate storage across AI, cloud, client, and enterprise environments. This update to NVMe technology builds on the strengths of previous NVMe specifications, introducing important new features for modern computing environments while streamlining development and time to market. NVMe technology, which began as a single PCIe SSD specification, has grown to nearly a dozen specifications with multiple command sets. Adoption of NVMe technology continues to expand, successfully unifying client, cloud, AI, and storage with a common architecture. The future of NVMe technology is bright, with 75 new certified technology proposals currently underway.'
