Intel and AMD establish 'x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group,' with participation from major technology companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Meta

On October 15, 2024 local time, Intel and AMD announced the establishment of the ' x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group ,' a group of technology leaders to promote

x86 , the world's most widely used computer architecture . In addition to Intel and AMD, members include Broadcom, Dell, Google, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, HP, Lenovo, Meta, Microsoft, Oracle, and Red Hat, and these major technology companies will work together on architectural interoperability to simplify software development across the ecosystem.

x86 has served as the foundation of computing for over 40 years and has established itself as the preferred architecture for data centers and PCs worldwide. In an evolving environment characterized by dynamic AI workloads, custom chiplets, and advancements in 3D packaging and system architectures, a robust and ever-expanding x86 ecosystem is more important than ever.

'We are on the cusp of one of the most significant shifts in the x86 architecture and ecosystem in decades,' said Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger. 'New levels of customization, compatibility and extensibility are required to meet current and future customer needs. We are proud to stand with AMD and the founding members of this advisory group as we shape the future of computing, and we are incredibly grateful for the support of so many industry leaders.'

'The formation of the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group will ensure that the x86 architecture continues to evolve as the computing platform of choice for both developers and customers,' said AMD CEO Lisa Su. 'We are excited to bring the industry together to help guide future architectural enhancements and continue the incredible success of x86 for decades to come.'

Gelsinger posted a photo of himself and Su on X to celebrate the launch of the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group.

The x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group brings together industry leaders to shape the future of x86 as a computer architecture, fostering developer innovation through a more unified instruction set and architectural interfaces. This effort will improve compatibility, predictability, and consistency across x86 products. To achieve this, the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group seeks technical input on key features and characteristics from the x86 hardware and software communities. The collaboration will drive consistent and compatible implementation of key x86 architectural features and programming models across all sectors, including data center, cloud, client, edge, and embedded devices, ultimately benefiting customers.

Expected outcomes of the establishment of the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group include:

Increase customer choice and compatibility across hardware and software, enabling them to quickly take advantage of new cutting-edge capabilities.
- Simplify architectural guidelines, enforce software consistency and standardize interfaces across Intel and AMD x86 products.
- Enables greater and more efficient integration of new features into operating systems, frameworks and applications.

Founding members of the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group include leading technology companies such as Broadcom, Dell, Google, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, HP, Lenovo, Meta, Microsoft, Oracle and Red Hat, as well as Linux kernel developer Linus Torvalds and Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney .

Regarding the establishment of the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group, technology media Tom's Hardware pointed out that 'it is intended to standardize at least some of the new additions and changes to the x86

instruction set architecture (ISA).'

While the areas of change and collaboration have not been defined at the time of writing, Tom's Hardware notes that there are clear candidates for discussion, naming AMD's ' Supervisor Entry Extensions ' and Intel's ' Flexible Return and Event Delivery (FRED) ' as candidates.

'Improved collaboration and standardization will also benefit security-related features,' Tom's Hardware writes. Intel and AMD already collaborate behind the scenes on multiple axes, with standards like PCIe, ACPI and USB also being the result of close collaboration across the industry. Naturally, any joint decisions about the future of x86 could be contentious between the two rivals, but 'the presence of other companies and customers in the group will help guide both companies in the right direction,' said Forrest Norrod, general manager of AMD's Data Center Solutions division.
