Intel announces CPUs covered by 2-year extended warranty, free replacement of CPUs with frequent crashes possible

Regarding the crash problem occurring in 13th generation Core processors and 14th generation Core processors, Intel has acknowledged that there was a problem with its own design and has announced that it will extend the warranty period for some CPUs by two years. A list of CPUs that are eligible for the warranty extension has been newly announced.

PCs equipped with 13th and 14th generation Core processors have reported problems such as 'game crashes' and 'software cannot be run properly.' In April 2024, Intel claimed that 'the cause of the crashes was the overclocking settings of the motherboard,' but in July 2024, it acknowledged that there was a problem with its design and promised to distribute a patch to fix the bug.

According to Intel, the crash problem was caused by a 'microcode defect that caused the processor to be subjected to an abnormally high voltage.' For this reason, it has been pointed out that the processor with the crash problem is likely to be physically damaged by the voltage rise, and that even if a patch is introduced, it may not be able to perform as before. In response to this, Intel announced that it would extend the warranty period for its 13th and 14th generation Core processors by two years in August 2024.

The extended warranty applies to both boxed processors available in the DIY PC market and tray processors sold to PC manufacturers. Since 12th generation and later processors come with a three-year limited warranty, models covered by this extended warranty will have a total warranty of five years.

Intel advises users who need to replace their processor to contact Intel customer support if they have a boxed processor, or to contact the place where they bought their PC if they have a tray processor.

Although there have been many reports of problems with the 13th and 14th generation Core processors on laptops , Intel has not yet acknowledged any issues with the laptop processors.
