The dataset released on GitHub this time is for the map 'Caldera', which was added to the game in December 2021 as a new map for 'Call of Duty: Warzone', which was released in March 2020. After the map was added, 'Call of Duty: Warzone' was renamed 'Call of Duty: Warzone Caldera' and re-released, but the service was terminated in September 2023.

Activision then updated its official blog on July 30, 2024, stating, 'With a vision to expand the knowledge base of the gaming industry, we are pleased to release an open source dataset featuring the Call of Duty: Warzone Caldera map for non-commercial use.' Announced the release of the map data.

The map is available in the 3D file format 'OpenUSD' and contains a near-complete geometry of Caldera, as well as random, anonymous data showing how players move around the map.

The initiative represents Activision's commitment to fostering advancements in game development while also driving innovation and growth in multiple areas, including AI learning within the academic and research communities.

Caldera was chosen because it best represents the scale and complexity of Activision's game design philosophy.

'Academics have used game data to study graphics and rendering techniques, but complete and practical datasets on this scale are scarce, so Caldera will be used for such research. Activision also hopes that the insights gained from research using this data will help develop more compelling games in the future.'

'We're excited to see what the academic community will create from Caldera and what new technologies we can't even imagine,' said Michael Vance, senior vice president and fellow software engineer at Activision.
