In September 2023, Spotify began testing a system that would allow some users to pay to view lyrics. Free users could view lyrics up to three times a month, and if they wanted to view them more than that, they had to subscribe to a paid Premium plan. At the time, Spotify said, 'This feature is just a test and may eventually be expanded to a larger number of users, but it may remain an experiment.'
When the target users of this system were expanded in May 2024, many users were dissatisfied. According to reports, when free users tried to display lyrics, the following message was displayed, urging them to subscribe to the Premium plan.

Due to growing dissatisfaction among many users, Spotify has discontinued the implementation of this system. A Spotify spokesperson said, 'Feature availability may vary by demographic, market, and device, so we are constantly testing and improving at Spotify. As a result of testing, we will expand lyrics visibility to free users so that more people can view more lyrics.' In addition, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek explained in a July 2024 earnings call that 'we are prioritizing the enhancement of our free product and will make further improvements for free users in the coming months.'
