I tried 'Katsu Curry Jumbo Toast' which is a giant toast with a whole loaf of bread, topped with a heap of curry and a freshly fried cutlet

Cafe Rokuro, a long-established coffee shop in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture, serves a ' Katsu Curry Jumbo Toast ' in which a loaf of toast is used as a bowl for katsu curry. The impact of a whole loaf of toast being katsu curry is so great that I decided to go and try it to see for myself and see for myself what kind of dish it is.

Cafe Rokuro is about a 3-minute walk from Keisei Chiba Chuo Station. The address is ' 3-4-10 Chuo, Chuo-ku, Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture .'

Arrived at Cafe Rokuro.

I sat down at the seat I was shown and checked the menu. The Katsu Curry Jumbo Toast was listed as the 'No. 1 recommendation.'

There were many other varieties of jumbo toast available, including cheese curry jumbo toast, curry jumbo toast, and matcha azuki jumbo toast.

So I ordered the Katsu Curry Jumbo Toast. You can order by scanning the QR code on the table with your smartphone, and you can also pay on your smartphone.

The cutlet was brought to the table. In addition to a fork, spoon, and knife, disposable chopsticks were also provided. The waiter said, 'It is recommended to eat the cutlet with chopsticks.'

We were also given a guide on 'How to Eat Jumbo Toast Deliciously.'

About 15 minutes after ordering, the Katsu Curry Jumbo Toast arrived.

Indeed, a loaf of bread serves as a vessel for the katsu curry. The surface is toasted crispy and overflows with curry roux.

A cutlet skewered in a spectacular fashion.

It was served with shredded cabbage underneath.

It is also topped with a soft-boiled egg.

To compare the size, we lined up a transportation IC card with a long side of 85.6 mm. Including the cutlet part, the height seems to be about 15 cm.

I didn't know where to start, so I decided to try the pork cutlet first. The pork loin wrapped in a crispy batter was chewy yet juicy. It was freshly fried, so it was of a very high standard.

I mixed the overflowing curry roux with shredded cabbage and tried it. It also had cheese inside, so it was quite filling. The curry was moderately spicy but mild. It was only medium spicy, so even people who don't like spicy food could easily eat it.

When I probed the ocean of curry roux with my fork, I found small pieces of white bread submerged in the broth. I mixed the bread with the curry roux and continued eating.

In between meals, I also eat pork cutlets and cabbage. If you crumble a soft-boiled egg and dip it in the curry, the pork cutlet has a milder taste.

By continuing to eat in this way, I was able to finish the inside of the toast neatly, but since the bowl of this Katsu Curry Jumbo Toast is also toast, I would like to continue eating the crust. However, I ended up using up all the curry roux to eat the inside of the toast.

The Katsu Curry Jumbo Toast comes with a free cup of 'extra curry roux.' I asked the waiter to bring me some extra curry roux.

Pour the curry roux into the toast bowl and then eat the bowl.

The toast was quite well toasted, so the outer part was quite hard. I cut it up with a knife and fork, dipped it in the curry roux and continued eating.

However, one cup of curry roux may not be enough. Also, the toast itself is quite hard, so you start to feel full little by little as you chew it several times.

Still, I diligently dismantle the toast with a knife and fork. This task is quite hard, and even though I'm taking in a lot of calories, I feel like I'm burning a fair amount of calories just by cutting the toast into small pieces.

After about 40 minutes of eating, I finally finished it. I had completely run out of curry roux towards the end, so if you have the time, you can order more curry roux, or add toppings such as vanilla ice cream, red beans, and butter, which are sold separately, to make it a more daring dessert-like change of flavor. Since you'll be eating a whole loaf of bread plus katsu curry, it may be too much for some people to finish. If you're going to try it, make sure you're really hungry beforehand.

The Katsu Curry Jumbo Toast is 2,178 yen by itself (tax included), and a set with salad and a drink is 2,563 yen (tax included). Cafe Rokuro is open every day except for the New Year holidays, and is open from 11:00 to 18:00 (last order 17:30). There are 34 seats, all of which are non-smoking.
