Future iPhones could be unlocked using an electrocardiogram, according to an Apple patent

On July 30, 2024, Apple obtained a patent titled ' Seamlessly embedded heart rate monitor .' This patent suggests that Apple devices may be equipped with an 'electrocardiogram unlocking function.'

The 'Seamlessly embedded heart rate monitor' is a patent that focuses on the electrical signals emitted by the heart, and describes the idea of using an electrocardiogram for user authentication.

The patent information shows an iPhone as an example of a device that unlocks using an electrocardiogram. To create an electrocardiogram, you need to touch the device at two points on your body, but the iPhone shown in the example has electrodes on both sides and the back, so it can detect electrical signals just by grabbing and holding it.

The patent also describes the idea of 'detecting the user's mood from an electrocardiogram,' and describes a function to 'play music that matches the mood' as an example of how to use the idea. However, Apple has obtained a huge number of patents, and there are many patents that are not reflected in actual products. For this reason, it is quite possible that the functions of unlocking and mood detection using an electrocardiogram will remain just ideas.

The idea of identifying individuals using electrocardiograms is not new; research is also being conducted in Japan on identifying individuals by installing electrodes in toilet seats.
