Xbox 360's built-in game store finally shuts down, ending 19 years of history

The Xbox 360 Store, the built-in game store of Microsoft's home game console ' Xbox 360 ', released on November 22, 2005, was finally closed on July 29, 2024 local time. As a result, it is no longer possible to purchase new games or downloadable content (DLC) on the Xbox 360.

In August 2023, Microsoft announced that as of July 29, 2024, Xbox 360 users will no longer be able to purchase new games, DLC, and other entertainment content from the Xbox 360 Store or the online game store, Xbox Games Store .

Prior to the closure, Microsoft had been running sales on games in the Xbox 360 Store. Microsoft is also making Xbox 360 games playable on its next-generation consoles, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, so that Xbox 360 titles can be played even after the store is closed. However, there are many titles released for the Xbox 360 that do not have packaged versions and are not backward compatible.

As a result, the Video Game History Foundation, a nonprofit organization that works to preserve retro games, posted this message: 'Today, the Xbox 360 Store on Xbox 360 was permanently shut down, removing hundreds of games and DLC from the marketplace and making them legally inaccessible. While we work to fix copyright laws to preserve our games, we thought it would be okay to have a cake for now.'

With the closure of the Xbox 360 Store, many Internet users have been posting their fond memories of their Xbox 360.

On Reddit, you can see users enthusiastically reminiscing about old Xbox 360 titles, as well as users excitedly discussing the possibility that some titles will become even more expensive among retro game collectors due to the store's closure.

Former Xbox executive Larry Frivb also thanked players, saying, 'After nearly 19 years since the launch of the Xbox 360, all good things must come to an end. The Xbox 360 Store is now closed for 24 hours. It has been a pleasure to share with the community the thousands of Xbox 360 Store content and updates I have provided over the years. Thank you for playing, playing fair, and sharing your feedback.'

In addition, Nintendo's Wii (released in 2006), a home video game console of the same generation as the Xbox 360, discontinued its own online game store function , the Wii Shopping Channel, in 2019, but Sony Interactive Entertainment's (SIE) PlayStation 3 (released in 2006) still has an online store function available at the time of writing.

SIE had previously announced that it would be ending the new content purchase feature for PS3 and PlayStation Vita, but decided to continue the service after receiving backlash from users.
