Following the shooting of presidential candidate Donald Trump in July 2024, it was reported that Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, plans to donate $45 million (approximately 7 billion yen) per month to Trump support groups. Musk denied the report, calling it 'completely false,' but acknowledged that he is donating to groups that support the Republican Party.

In the United States, companies and organizations are prohibited from making direct donations to political parties and politicians, and donations are collected through political action committees (PACs). Individual donations to PACs that support a particular political party or politician are limited to $5,000 (approximately 770,000 yen) per person per year.

However, in recent years, following a judicial ruling that, from the perspective of freedom of speech, 'political activities that do not involve direct cooperative relationships with candidates or political parties do not require limits on donations,' 'super PACs,' which are PACs independent of candidates, have become popular.

The Wall Street Journal reported in July 2024 that Musk plans to donate $45 million a month to the super PAC America PAC, which Musk helped set up. America PAC is a super PAC that Musk helped set up, and although it does not directly support Trump's activities, it does provide funding to Republican candidates.

In response to the Wall Street Journal report, Musk denied it, saying, 'This report is completely stupid. I never said I would give $45 million a month to Mr. Trump. This is a completely fake story from the Wall Street Journal!'

On the other hand, Musk said, 'I've made some donations to America PAC, but the amounts are much smaller, and the PAC's core values are to support meritocracy and individual freedom. Not all Republicans, but most, are on the side of meritocracy and freedom,' acknowledging that he has made donations to America PAC. It has not been made clear how much Musk has donated specifically.

In an interview with a conservative commentator on Twitter on July 22, Musk acknowledged his involvement in the founding of America PAC and claimed that it was intended to act as a moderate influence on politics. 'I don't have a policy on personality cults,' Musk said, but added that Trump's appearance in the aftermath of the shooting served to intimidate America's enemies.

In addition, Trump has stated that if elected, he will impose high tariffs on Mexican-made car imports, and in response, Musk has canceled his investment in Tesla's Mexican factory. In this way, it cannot be said that Trump's policies will necessarily have a positive effect on Musk's business.
