Cellebrite specializes in cracking smartphones and provides a service to extract data from locked devices. Cellebrite has close ties to law enforcement agencies because data extracted from suspects' smartphones can provide important clues in criminal investigations.

Cellebrite first became known in 2015 when rumors spread that the FBI had asked Cellebrite to unlock the iPhone of a suspect in a mass shooting in the United States . It is unclear whether Cellebrite actually unlocked the suspect's smartphone, but this incident made the company's name known to many ordinary people.

Cellebrite keeps its method of unlocking smartphones secret, but 404 Media says it has obtained documents from a Cellebrite customer that include a list of iPhones that Cellebrite can unlock.

Below is the list of iPhones that Cellebrite can unlock, published by 404 Media. The iPhone 12 and later series with iOS 17.1 to 17.3.1 are listed as 'Coming soon,' while all iPhones with iOS 17.4 or later are listed as 'In Research,' indicating that these iPhones cannot be unlocked with Cellebrite.

At the time of writing, the situation may have already changed, but if this list remains unchanged, Cellebrite would be unable to unlock 77% of all iPhones, and 87% of iPhones released in the last four years.

Meanwhile, separate documents obtained by 404 Media suggest that Cellebrite can unlock most Android phones.

In addition, it has been reported that the FBI is also working with Cellebrite to unlock the suspect's smartphone in the investigation of the Donald Trump shooting that occurred in July 2024.
