84% of PC users are against buying a PC with AI capabilities

Advances in AI have led to the integration of AI into a variety of software, including drawing software, cameras, and memo apps. Furthermore, the emergence of 'NPUs,' processors specialized for AI processing, has led to

the emergence of PCs that boast efficient use of AI, and the link between PCs and AI is being strengthened. In a survey asking about PCs with such AI capabilities, 84% of people answered that they 'don't intend to spend money on them.'

Technology media TechPowerUp asked a question in its forums: 'AI functions are being integrated into hardware, promising improved performance and functionality. However, this advanced technology often comes at a premium price. Would you be willing to pay a premium for hardware with AI capabilities?' and invited readers to respond.

At the time of writing, 26,515 people answered this question, with 22,290 people, or 84%, answering 'no.' 1,947 people, or 7.3%, answered 'yes,' and 2,278 people, or 8.6%, answered 'I don't know.'

Respondents

commented , 'I don't see any use for AI beyond creating cool images,' and, 'All useful AI I've seen has been datacenter-hosted AI requiring hundreds of GB or TB of RAM for LLM datasets, hundreds of TB of fast storage for inference, and a year or more of training on PB-sized datasets. The 'local AI' software I've tried has been almost worthless beyond image manipulation that doesn't really qualify as AI. Sure, you can do some things with CUDA on a GPU, but the real power is in the cloud service subscription, where something that would take 30 hours to do locally takes 2 minutes in the cloud. Right now AI is a cloud product, and there is a huge gap between what a local NPU can achieve. I won't buy it this generation.'

Technology media VideoCardz said the results show that, 'Even though the PC market is moving toward integrating AI, most technology enthusiasts who read TechPowerUp are skeptical of its value. Manufacturers should know more about the preferences of their core users.'
