Florida transportation authorities worked with software developer Thales Defense & Security to develop a driver's license app called ' Florida Smart ID ,' which launched in November 2021. Florida Smart ID is available for iOS and Android, and was promoted as a way to verify age and identity simply by showing the screen of a smartphone.

However, Florida Smart ID has problems such as 'initial setup does not work well' and 'it is not well known and is not useful for identification.' In addition, Florida state law requires that drivers carry a physical driver's license when driving. Due to these circumstances, the use of Florida Smart ID has not been widespread. In April 2023, local media South Florida Sun Sentinel reported that 'Of the 17.9 million Florida driver's license holders, only 95,000 users use Florida Smart ID.'

Florida Smart ID also had stability issues, causing an outage in June 2023 that made the app unusable.

Meanwhile, in July 2024, Florida driving authorities announced, 'We are currently removing Florida Smart ID from the app store. Florida Smart ID will be updated and improved by a new vendor,' and suddenly suspended the release of Florida Smart ID without any preparation period. In addition, Florida Smart ID users received a notice that 'the downloaded app will become unusable, so please delete it from your device.'

It is unclear which vendor Florida has selected to remake its Florida Smart ID, but foreign media 9to5Mac points out that 'the easiest solution for Florida would be to utilize Apple's iPhone ID issuing feature or the ID verification feature built into Google Wallet .'
