Speed Limiters Now Mandatory in All New EU Cars

ISA is a system that issues a warning and controls accelerator input when the speed limit is exceeded. ISA calculates the speed limit using both the in-car camera and GPS, and notifies the driver by visual, auditory, and haptic feedback that vibrates the steering wheel and throttle pedal when the speed limit is exceeded, making it possible to proactively prevent speeding.
Until now, the EU has made it mandatory for all new passenger cars, commercial vehicles, trucks, buses, etc. released after July 6, 2022 to be equipped with ISA.

The EU has expanded the scope of the obligation to install ISA, making it mandatory for all newly registered vehicles sold after July 7, 2024 to be equipped with ISA. However, there is no obligation to install ISA for vehicles registered before July 7, 2024.
Regarding ISA, the EU states that 'it is required that the driver's possible actions should not be restricted at any moment while driving,' demonstrating a driver-centric position, and the driver can always control the ISA system, including disabling it. In fact, even when ISA is activated and the car is decelerating, the driver can smoothly disable the system by pressing hard on the accelerator pedal.
However, some critics speculate that 'restrictions may be tightened in the future' and that 'combined with V2X technology, areas where drivers cannot disable ISA' may be created.
'The deployment of ISA is a major step forward for road safety and has the potential to dramatically reduce road fatalities and injuries. Car manufacturers can now harness the full potential of ISA to make roads safer for all,' the European Commission said.
