According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, who is familiar with Apple information, Apple is starting a project codenamed 'B798' in 2023, and this project is developing 'AirPods with a low-resolution camera sensor.'

Ming-Chi Kuo, an Apple analyst, also reports that the camera sensor in the AirPods is an IR (infrared) sensor used for Face ID in iPhones, and can detect changes in the surrounding environment.

Kuo points out that Apple has equipped AirPods with IR sensors in order to integrate them with headsets such as Apple Vision Pro in the future, improving the spatial audio user experience and strengthening the spatial computing ecosystem.

In addition, the IR sensor will enable gesture control in the air, enhancing human-device interaction, Kuo said. For example, the IR sensor can monitor the surrounding video and automatically adjust the volume when someone speaks to or approaches, facilitating communication between people.

Kuo also said that the supplier of the IR sensor for the AirPods is Foxconn, which ships 18 to 20 million IR sensors per year, and Kuo believes that Foxconn is well equipped to mass-produce AirPods.

Garman also said that in addition to the IR-sensor-equipped AirPods, Apple is also developing a smart ring that can monitor health information and smart glasses as an alternative to the AirPods.
