CPUs installed in PCs and smartphones are mainly designed based on architectures such as 'x86' and 'Arm'. However, the x86 architecture is essentially exclusively owned by Intel and AMD, and in order to develop products using the Arm architecture, it is necessary to enter into a license agreement with Arm. For this reason, there is a problem in the CPU industry that it is difficult for new entrants to enter the industry.

On the other hand, RISC-V is an open source architecture that allows anyone to freely develop products using RISC-V. RISC-V is becoming more widely adopted in fields such as sensors and IoT, and in 2022, Deep Computing released the DC-ROMA RISC-V Laptop, a notebook PC equipped with a RISC-V processor.

Deep Computing has recently announced that it has collaborated with Framework to develop a motherboard equipped with a RISC-V processor for the modular PC ' Framework Laptop 13 '. The newly developed motherboard is equipped with StarFive 's processor '(PDF file ) JH7110 ', which uses the RISC-V-based CPU core '(PDF file ) U74 RISC-V ' developed by SiFive .

Although the Framework Laptop 13 is a PC that can freely customize various parts such as memory and storage, the RISC-V processor-equipped motherboard has restrictions such as 'soldering dedicated memory onto the motherboard' and 'using microSD cards and eMMC for storage' due to the performance of the processor. Framework says about the RISC-V processor-equipped motherboard, 'The main target of this generation is developers and PC enthusiasts, focusing on development and testing purposes.'

Details of the RISC-V processor-equipped motherboards will be announced at the RISC-V Summit Europe 2024, which will be held from June 24th to 28th, 2024.
