In order to enable rapid and large-scale deployment of Google's latest AI tools to users, Google has announced that it plans to adopt parts of the Android stack, such as the Android Linux kernel and the Android framework, as part of the foundation of ChromeOS. The collaboration between Android and ChromeOS has been progressing slowly, with Android apps already available on ChromeOS and the integration of the Bluetooth stack beginning in ChromeOS 122, announced in March 2024.

Google claims that bringing its Android-based technology stack to ChromeOS will accelerate the pace of AI innovation at the heart of ChromeOS, simplify engineering efforts, and enable Chromebooks to work better with a range of devices including smartphones and accessories, while continuing to provide unparalleled security, a consistent look and feel, and extensive management capabilities to ChromeOS users, businesses, and schools.

Improvements to the technology stack have already begun, but it will be some time before they are made available to consumers. Google explains that 'when it's ready, we'll provide a seamless transition to the updated experience,' and that there will be no changes to regular software updates or new innovations until the transition.
