'Photon' is a palm-sized waterproof camera that can take 50,000 photos on a single charge and has a motion detection function

A small camera with a long battery life and motion detection function is useful for monitoring people entering and exiting parking lots and entrances, and for detecting animal movements outdoors. A new palm-sized waterproof camera called ' Photon ' has been released that can take an astounding 50,000 photos on a single charge and is also equipped with motion detection.

Here's a comparison of the Photon to a quarter coin. The Photon's case is made of aluminum and is palm-sized at 47mm wide x 36mm high x 31mm deep, smaller than the AirPods case. The camera's viewing angle is 130 degrees horizontally and 75 degrees vertically, and the photo resolution is 2304 x 1296 pixels.

Photon can take at least 50,000 photos on a single charge, but the number of photos that can be stored on the built-in storage (128GB SD card) is 21,970, and when the capacity is exceeded, the oldest photos are overwritten. In addition, in order to maximize battery life, Photon adopts a method of 'using the storage without formatting it and without a file system, and storing photos as raw data without encoding them into JPEG files, etc.' to reduce hardware processing as much as possible.

Photon can be set to take photos at specific times and dates, making it ideal for time-lapse photography, and can also be used as a security camera or wildlife observation camera, as it can detect motion and take photos. It has a motion detection range of up to 5m and an operating temperature range of 0-50 degrees Celsius.

The case is also waterproof enough to withstand normal rain, and no water was found to seep inside even after being submerged in water for seven days. However, depending on the depth of the water and the environment, water may still seep in, so it's best to think of it as just 'rainproof.'

In addition, since the low-light shooting performance is still under development, if you want to shoot in dark places, it is recommended to refrain from purchasing until a future software update. Also, at the time of writing, the motion detection sensor seems to react even to leaves and grass blown by the wind, so it is possible that a motion sensitivity setting will be added in a future software update.

Photon Transfer , the dedicated software for transferring Photon photo data, is designed exclusively for Mac. Photon does not communicate via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, so unless someone has physical access to the device, it cannot be hacked or have data uploaded to the cloud.

The official website sells the Photon online for $200 (approximately 31,000 yen) plus shipping.

Photon's source code and hardware configuration are fully open source and available on GitHub, so you can rewrite the code and customize it.

Photon's developer, Dave, wrote a thread on the social news site Hacker News. Dave said that the reason he developed Photon was because 'someone tried to steal my bike a few years ago, so I decided to make a little camera with a really long battery life to catch the thief.'

In response to Hacker News users' comments such as 'It's a shame that the data transfer software is Mac-only,' Dave replied, 'The reason we made it Mac-only is because we intended it to be proof to Mac users that the product is of high quality and conforms to the norms of the Mac platform. In my experience, cross-platform GUI software often goes against the conventions of Mac software.' Dave also said that he would consider developing management software for Windows and Linux once he could resolve the time and financial issues.
