Lucky began making his own VR headsets at the young age of 16 in 2009. However, according to Lucky, his first business was not Oculus VR, but a hardware project called 'ModRetro' that combined the latest technology with old game consoles. Lucky has also been working on 'Game Boy mods' for a long time, saying, 'I was the first person to put an LED backlight on a Game Boy, and I was the first person to transplant the inside of a Game Boy Advance to a Game Boy. These mod styles later became popular in the retro game modding industry.'

After many years of planning, Lackey announced 'ModRetro Chromatic' on June 2, 2024. ModRetro Chromatic reproduces the appearance, resolution, and buttons of the Game Boy, while improving on the fully custom LCD display that is visible even in sunlight and the aluminum alloy body for durability and longevity. 'ModRetro Chromatic is the ultimate tribute to the Game Boy's beautiful form, superior technology, and cultural influence,' Lackey said.

The first Game Boy had a four-tone (monochrome) display, and nine years later the colorized

Game Boy Color was released. ModRetro Chromatic is said to have a color that faithfully reproduces the Game Boy Color. Below is a photo that Lucky sent to the overseas media The Verge, comparing ModRetro Chromatic (left) with the Analogue Pocket (right), a Game Boy reproduction hardware released in 2021. Lucky said, 'Note that the Laplace in this image is a flashy yellow on the Analogue Pocket. The Analogue Pocket has a large and colorful screen, but it is a custom display that does not reproduce the color temperature of the Game Boy Color. On the other hand, ModRetro Chromatic is a display that is closer to the 'real thing' by reproducing the color temperature while adding brightness that allows you to play even under sunlight.'

ModRetro Chromatic has a built-in FPGA , so you can play real Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges in the same way as a real Game Boy. In addition, the popularity of ' Tetris ' contributed to the explosive spread of the Game Boy in the early version of the Game Boy in 1989, but ModRetro Chromatic comes with a set of Tetris developed in-house.

Also announced was the Chromatic Cartridge, a line of original games. 'We have plans for full physical re-releases and remasters of classic Game Boy titles, all-new titles from amazing indie developers, the first releases of Game Boy games that were cancelled before release, and even some titles that were cancelled before the general public even knew about them,' said Luckey.

The price of ModRetro Chromatic is 31,700 yen. It is available in five colors: Inferno (orange), Leaf (green), Bubblegum (pink), Volt (yellow), Wave (light blue), and Midnight (black). In addition, you can choose between the 'ENGLISH' version with buttons labeled 'A', 'B', 'SERECT', and 'START', and the 'JAPANESE' version with buttons labeled 'A', 'B', 'SELECT', and 'START'.

ModRetro Chromatic is currently accepting pre-orders at the time of writing, and is scheduled to be shipped during the Christmas season of 2024. Lucky said, 'We intend to manufacture only the amount necessary to meet pre-orders,' so to ensure you get it, we recommend that you make a reservation without waiting for the release.

Regarding ModRetro Chromatic, Lackey said, 'I don't see this as a way to make money. I see it as a way to create the world's greatest tribute to the Game Boy. This is something I'll be proud of for a long time.'
