Study shows most doctors endorsing drugs on X are paid to do so
In the United States, pharmaceutical companies are allowed to advertise their drugs on radio, television, social media, etc. Doctors and other medical professionals are also allowed to receive compensation for promoting certain drugs.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' website , Open Payments , makes it possible to identify doctors who receive payments for recommending drugs and the companies that paid them.
This time, a research team led by Sonia Persaud of Queen's University identified 28 doctors who post on X that introduce medicines. They then searched for the doctors' names on Open Payments. As a result, it was found that 26 of the 28 doctors received compensation from the manufacturers of the medicines they introduced. It was also found that 24 doctors received compensation related to specific medicines.
According to the research team, in many cases doctors were paid for 'speaking' or 'consulting' fees, and most of the posts recommending the use of certain medicines were paid for.
It was also noted that only one of the 28 had contributed to research leading to the development of approved medicines.
The research team also stated, 'Some people may criticize the practice of recommending medicines and receiving compensation as 'unethical,' but this practice is not illegal in the United States and has no impact on medical licenses.'
