'Lifeseeker' detects smartphone locations from the sky to find people in distress

' Lifeseeker ' was developed by Centum Research & Technology of Spain as a new technology for searching for lost people. In one operational example, it was reported that a pair of people lost in a canyon were found in just 2 minutes and 14 seconds.

'Lifeseeker' is a system that takes advantage of the fact that most people, including mountain climbers, own smartphones or mobile phones, and uses the phone of a person in distress as a beacon to guide emergency teams.

The system is very simple. It consists of a 'small base station' that is attached to a helicopter or drone and a tablet. The system identifies the location of the phone within about three miles (about 4.8 km) of the aircraft, checks it on the tablet, and searches for the person in distress.

The process from location detection to detailed location refinement takes about a minute.

In fact, in a test operation conducted by

Colorado Highland Helicopters , based in Durango in the mountainous region of southern Colorado, they successfully found two people stranded in La Plata Canyon in just 2 minutes and 14 seconds.

The rugged terrain of the La Plata Valley, with forests sandwiched between 3,000-meter-high mountains, makes it difficult to find people in distress from the air, let alone from the ground.

Rescue coordinator Tim Durkin said the Lifeseeker got within 30 metres of the victim, but he was under dense tree cover and could not be seen.

Lifeseeker can also send messages to victims, telling them where a helicopter can land, telling them to stay in place, or warning them of potential wildfires or floods.

To date, Lifeseeker has been deployed by more than 35 operators in more than 10 countries and has successfully completed more than 200 missions. Its detection accuracy is said to be within 5 meters.
