Metacritic's 'Best Games of 2024' top three are 'FFVIIR,' 'Animal Well,' and 'Balatro,' with half of the top ten being indie games
In its 'Best Games of 2024' list published by Metacritic, a website that compiles reviews from multiple review sites, half of the top 10 games are indie games.

◆1st place: FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH
FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH is a remake of the 1997 PlayStation game FINAL FANTASY VII and is available for the PlayStation 5 (PS5). It has a metascore of 92 out of 100 based on 149 reviewer ratings, and a user score of 9.1 out of 10 based on 4,041 user ratings.
Game review site GameMAG gave it a perfect score of 100, stating , 'Simply put, FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH is one of the greatest masterpieces in the entire history of Square Enix.'
◆2nd place: ANIMAL WELL
Coming in at a respectable second place after the major developers' big-budget games is ' ANIMAL WELL ,' developed by Shared Memory, an independent developer based in Chicago, Illinois. ANIMAL WELL is a game in which you explore a dark map while collecting items, and Japanese gamers have described it as 'Puzzle 3: Action 7 ' and ' Exploration action & puzzle Metroidvania .' Metacritic has a Metascore of 90 points and a User Score of 7.8 points. A review by technology media The Verge states, 'I bought it because of the overwhelmingly positive reviews, but at first it was too difficult and I was frustrated. However, after playing for a while, I realized a certain fact and my thoughts changed 180 degrees,' suggesting that it is important to keep playing.
◆3rd place: Balatro
Balatro is a poker and roguelike game where players collect Jokers, which increase the score of certain hands and cards to an unfair level, and other strengthening cards to aim for a high score. It has a metascore of 90 and a user score of 8.5, and has been praised as ' amazingly addictive poker ' and ' a great roguelike deck builder .'
The Last of Us Part II Remastered is a remastered version of ' The Last of Us Part II ' for the PlayStation 4 (PS4) for the PS5. The original story remains the same, but you can enjoy enhanced graphics and original game modes. The game has a metascore of 90 points and a user score of 8.1 points.
◆5th place: Tekken 8
Tekken 8 is the eighth numbered title in the fighting game series Tekken . It has a Metascore of 90 and a User Score of 7.5. Digitalchumps, a gaming media outlet, said, 'It stays true to its roots of being serious yet playful. It dramatically simplifies combat for new players and speeds it up for series veterans like me. If you're new to the series, Tekken 8 is the fighting game to play this year.'
Coming in at number 6 are Yakuza 8 , Horizon Forbidden West: Complete Edition , Paper Mario RPG (Remake) , Lorelei and the Laser Eyes , and MULLET MADJACK . At the time of writing, five of the top ten titles are indie games.
