Google announces initiative to reuse waste heat from data centers for heating to cover 80% of local demand

It turns out that Google is working with a local energy company in Finland to use waste heat from its data centers for district heating. Until now, Google has reused waste heat within the company, but as the scale of its data centers expands, it has decided to provide it to the outside world, which is expected to cover 80% of the area's annual heating demand.

The plan is to build a data center in Hamina, located about 150km east of Helsinki, the capital of Finland.

Until now, Google has reused waste heat from its Hamina data center to heat an adjacent office building.

However, to strengthen the computing power of AI, it has been decided to expand the scale of the Hamina Data Center at a cost of 1 billion euros (about 170 billion yen), and in cooperation with energy company Haminan Energia, it has been decided to divert the increased waste heat to heating homes, schools, public facilities, etc. near the data center.

The expansion of the data center is expected to create 500 jobs in Hamina, including 100 full-time jobs and 400 subcontracted jobs.

Commenting on the plan, Hamina Mayor Ilari Susal said: 'Google and the city of Hamina have a long and thriving history together. Google is a great example of a company with a strong focus on a sustainable future. Hamina is pleased to be Google's home in Finland.'

The heat will be provided free of charge and is expected to cover 80% of annual heat demand. Actual use for heating is expected to begin in the second half of 2025.
