The CoD series, created by Activision Blizzard, has been called 'one of the most successful entertainment products of all time' and is a popular series that has generated sales of $30 billion (approximately 4.6 trillion yen). Until now, the CoD series has been sold as a console version such as PlayStation, and a PC version available for purchase on Steam, etc., and most of them were one-time purchases that could be played forever once the game was purchased.

Activision Blizzard announced that it would be acquired by Microsoft in January 2022, and the completion of the acquisition was announced in October 2023. In recent years, Microsoft has been actively expanding Xbox Game Pass as part of its efforts to break PlayStation's monopoly, and in February 2024, Microsoft reported that the number of Xbox Game Pass subscribers had exceeded 34 million, a rapid increase from 25 million as of January 2022.

In addition, it has been reported that Microsoft will make the next installment of the CoD series available on Xbox Game Pass from the first day of release at

the Xbox Games Showcase to be held on June 9, 2024. Prior to the Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft said, 'We'll be taking a special deep dive into the next installment of our beloved franchise,' and it is believed that this will be the next installment of the CoD series.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is concerned that adding new CoD titles to its subscription service Xbox Game Pass could reduce the revenue it has earned from the CoD series. Former Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said, 'I have an aversion to the idea of a game subscription service,' and TD Cowen analyst Doug Kreutz said, 'An industry-wide shift to a subscription model would have a negative impact on publisher value creation.'

The Wall Street Journal did not reveal whether the additional fees for playing the CoD series on Xbox Game Pass or the subscription fee for Game Pass Ultimate, which includes new games, will be increased.

Microsoft signed a contract in 2022 to supply the CoD series to Nintendo for 10 years, and in July 2023 it agreed with SIE to continue supplying the CoD series to PlayStation. Foreign media outlet Thurrott has stated that 'sales of the CoD series on other platforms will continue,' denying that the CoD series will be an Xbox exclusive.
